Just animating. No big deal...

Work in progress screen cap for my two syllable piece, "check please!"

Here is my first ever animation with the Malcolm rig. The assignment was we had to choose a sound effect and have him react to it. I took it as an exercise to attempt a real cartoony, "Tex Avery" style of animation. A style I personally love and emulate.

There is a bunch of sticky moments in it when he turns into the take and several timing issues. Its not where I want it to be by any means but wanted to show it anyway. I'll spare you from my own criticism though :)

3D time again! Back in MAYA doing character animation with a much more complicated rig than I'm used to. This guy's name is Malcolm and he's pretty much a feature film studio quality rig. Which means if I get good and comfortable using him then hopefully it'll play to my advantage in the long-run. In an event, this is my second time using this guy and despite all the controllers on him and the headaches he's been giving me, I am starting to feel a little more at ease posing him.

The small box is my camera set-up, what the audience sees. The rest is the behind the scenes of how MAYA looks and works. I can zoom in and out on him as well as see and turn him in physical space. All those different loops and circles and squares all over his body and face control things like eyebrows, blinks, mouth corners, lips, you name it! Intimidating but I plan on mastering it! Be on the look out for some animation feature this dude.

This whole thing just started as a crude sketchbook doodle that I liked and decided to polish it up. I colored it a bit differently than usual. Tried to show some visual brush strokes, which is difficult to do in Flash. In any event it was just a fun thing to make and many thanks to Bill Watterson for my color palette. As a kid I have always loved his work and especially his water color illustrations of Calvin and Hobbes. His line quality is also flawless.

Also, more importantly, if you haven't read Calvin and Hobbes than shame on you. Its beyond worth checking out!

Also Toni....this one's for you :)
